Compensation: $60,000 - $70,000 plus health insurance stipend

The Organization: The Friends of Northern Lake Champlain (FNLC) is recognized as a
statewide leader that acts to clean the waters of northern Lake Champlain and its watershed by working collaboratively with private citizens, businesses, farmers, and government. FNLC’s focus is on catalyzing the actions and accountability needed to reduce land-use pollution and securing the essential local, state, and federal funding necessary for successful implementation.


Funding for FNLC comes from grants, donations, and events. The organization’s mission is accomplished through educational activities, water monitoring, and the design and implementation of non-point source phosphorus runoff reduction projects.
 

The Executive Director Overview: The Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Friends of Northern Lake Champlain and will oversee staff, programs, fundraising and budgeting. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in the natural sciences and 3 years of managerial experience in an organization. The ED will work with the Board of Directors to create and implement strategic plans and execute the organization’s mission.

Executive Director Responsibilities:

Leadership: The Executive Director manages and guides the daily operations of the
organization to ensure successful achievement of the organization’s goals and support the mission. S/he develops new and existing programs, prepares financial plans, and executes Board directives. The ED oversees the progress and reporting of grant obligations and seeks out new grant opportunities. S/he works closely with the Board in constructing and implementing strategic plans.

Fundraising: The Executive Director sets goals for donations, grants, events, and fundraising campaigns. S/he identifies grant opportunities, engages with major individual donors, and seeks out business support. Fundraising events will be created, planned, developed, and executed under the direction of the ED. The ED works with the Treasurer to create budgets and monitor financial performance.

 

Communications: The Executive Director represents FNLC at local and regional meetings of water quality groups, as well as with local and state government. S/he writes newsletters and press releases and works with local media to raise the profile of FNLC. The ED is responsible for the maintenance of the website and actively participating on social media sites. A membership database should be maintained and expanded, with frequent communications about programs and news. The ED should be able to communicate effectively orally as well as in writing.


Administration: The Executive Director will serve as the central point of contact for the
organization and will answer calls, take messages, answer correspondence, and collect mail. Building, maintaining, and managing office filing systems – both electronic and paper – are the ED’s responsibility. The ED manages staff and volunteers and executes personnel policies and procedures.


Finance/Bookkeeping: The Executive Director will maintain financial records and will work
with the Treasurer to create reports for the Board of Directors and to satisfy grant
requirements. S/he will work with the Treasurer and accountant on the filing of the 990 return, will ensure that insurance coverage is adequate and up-to-date, and will be responsible for payroll submission and records. The ED will create a budget for the organization in collaboration with the finance committee and Treasurer.

 

Board Responsibilities: The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, attends
Board meetings, provides updates on staff, programs, finances, and grants. The ED
collaborates with the Board Chair and Executive Committee to establish goals, objectives, and a strategic plan. S/he attends Board committee meetings and provides support and resources. The ED plans and executes the annual meeting. Working with the Board, the ED helps to recruit potential new board members.

 

Qualifications: The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to FNLC’s mission. The
ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in a natural science and have at least three years of managerial experience in an organization. S/he should have proven fundraising experience including writing grant proposals. The ED should have experience in financial management, budgeting, and understand general accounting practices. Excellent communication skills are vital, both written and verbal. A candidate should be comfortable with computer technology and understand websites and social media tools. The best candidate will exhibit passion, idealism, and integrity, and will be mission-driven and self-directed.
