Paddling the Rock River

This month, the Friends teamed up with Missisquoi River Basin Association to host a paddle of the Rock River in Highgate! Together, we paddled about 2 miles, stopping along the way to talk about the connection of the Rock River to the surrounding landscape and Lake Champlain, the importance of floodplains and wetlands, FNLC's work in the watershed, and why community involvement matters in the quality of our waterways.

We spotted beautiful plants like Cardinal Flowers and White Oaks, and fielded some great questions about farming practices, at-home stormwater management, and more. This trip was especially great as it allowed folks to really connect with the river, many of whom had never seen or spent time on it before. It also allowed us to get a better gauge of what people want to learn more about: water quality monitoring, local action on waterways, and the control of invasive species.

We are wrapping up a full season of programs and events, but we still want to hear from you as we begin to prepare for our next year! Do you have an idea for our next outing or a topic that you are especially interested in? Send Gracie an email by clicking the button below!
